Many companies have a critical need in access to Internet resources, and the mail service is used actively for business correspondence, organizing electronic circulation of documents, and other tasks. However, uncontrolled usage of information exchange services (the Web and e-mail) presents serious threats to information security, such as:
- Leak of confidential information stored and processed in a corporate network (unintentionally or with intent)
- Infiltration and loading of potentially hazardous attachments, viruses and malicious codes, and remote starting of malicious code
- Organization of a covert data transmission channel
- Distribution of false and unacceptable information, and company discrediting
- Creating the possibility of intercepting authentication information
- Transmission and loading of unacceptable objects (of large size and/or undesirable format)
- Unauthorized mailing ("spam")
- Unbusinesslike correspondence and visiting unbusinesslike web sites
- Work time and resources loss or complete mail service blocking
To protect from security threats involving uncontrolled Internet access, use context analysis and traffic filtration systems:
- To monitor access to information exchange services
- To counteract infiltration of viruses and malicious code into the corporate network
- To protect from confidential information leaks, including those by setting up covert channels
A special gateway is usually located on a dedicated server in the demilitarized zone. It completely parses and checks the content of incoming and outgoing traffic. The check results are used to block unacceptable Web pages and potentially hazardous downloaded objects and e-mail attachments; filter out unbusinesslike traffic, block spam, and check for viruses and malicious code.
Context analysis of the traffic dramatically increases the level of security and effectiveness of using external information exchange services, prevents information leak, reduces unbusinesslike traffic and the risk of damage by intrusion of malicious objects.
