Connecting to the corporate network and the Internet, access to vast information resources in open networks is an integral part of the business of any company. Such connection, however, involves threats to the organization’s information security, such as:

  • Unauthorized access (UA) to the company’s information resources (databases, internal corporate Web servers, and file warehouses) from external networks
  • Uncontrolled access of legal users (remote company divisions and clients) to corporate network resources

Firewalls (special software and hardware protection facilities) are used to protect the company’s information system from external unauthorized access and monitor access to resources of external networks.

A firewall is placed at the interface of the network being protected and the public network. It protects the company’s internal resources according to a preset security policy:

  • Provides discretionary access of users to resources based on preset rules
  • Identifies /authenticates users during attempts to access resources
  • Monitors incoming/outgoing information flows at several levels of the OSI/ISO model
  • Translates network addresses and conceals the structure of the network being protected
  • Registers access events and responds automatically to violations
  • Ensures centralized security policy management at several firewall gateways

A firewall can function on one server with a gateway of the virtual protected network (VPN) and with other facilities for protecting the perimeter and traffic monitoring.
