The business need for backup power supplies is becoming increasingly critical due to threats to Ukraine's power system. A year ago, the Russians began to destroy the Ukrainian energy system, which caused significant damage to the country's energy sector. Despite the titanic efforts of the military, air defense teams and power engineers, the power system remains vulnerable. The government has introduced emergency or planned shutdowns due to the reduction of nuclear and hydro-generating capacity. Businesses are preparing for possible power outages to ensure uninterrupted operation. Providing backup power to stores, bank branches or offices is a complex and multi-step process that includes several important steps.
VERNA designs and implements backup power systems for the continuity of customers' business processes. Example a typical solution for guaranteed operation in the event of a power outage. The cycle of work includes several stages.
First of all, our specialists determine the list of customer equipment that needs backup power, and calculate the required peak power for its operation. Next, they determine the guaranteed operating time without electricity and the time it takes to restore the system. In addition, our specialists prepare the layout of the equipment, carry out the installation of the electrical system and the cable connection system (SCS), as well as select and ensure the supply of the necessary equipment.
VERNA employs a team of qualified specialists who perform all this work. Our specialists have all the necessary certificates and permits to carry out such work.
Portable charging stations are the optimal solution for supporting business processes in the face of the vulnerability of the Ukrainian power system.
Portable charging stations are powerful battery systems that can support the operation of computers, servers, network equipment and other devices necessary for the smooth operation of an office or enterprise. They can be of different types, depending on the needs and scale of the business.
On the other hand, it is a small, mobile device that is an effective alternative source of electricity in situations of power outages. This device, similar to a power bank but with greater capabilities, is capable of powering not only mobile devices, but also office equipment. They can power different devices with different capacities, which makes them essential for shops, bank branches and businesses where it is necessary to ensure smooth operation in the event of power supply problems.
When choosing uninterruptible power for bank branches, retail stores, and businesses, it is important to understand the types of batteries used. Here are some of the most common:
• Li-ion (lithium-cobalt-phosphate). These batteries are the most common and have an average life of 800 charge/discharge cycles.
• NMC (lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide). These batteries are also quite popular and have an average life of 800 cycles.
• AGM/GEL (lead-acid). Typically, AGM batteries can withstand 300 to 700 discharge cycles, while GEL batteries often have a longer life span and can withstand 500 to 1000 cycles.
• LiFePO4 (lithium-iron-phosphate). This type of battery is gaining more and more popularity due to its much higher life - from 2000 to 5000 charge/discharge cycles, which allows the use of the station for 5 years.
LiFePO4 batteries are a new generation of lithium-ion batteries that are characterized by high energy density, long service life and less tendency to ignite. Their chemical structure ensures high energy efficiency and overload resistance.
Lead-acid batteries AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) and GEL differ from traditional batteries by their improved tightness and increased resistance to vibrations. In AGM batteries, the electrolyte is held in fiberglass mats, which reduces the risk of leaks and improves current conductivity.
Gel batteries use the electrolyte in the gel-like state, which ensures stable operation at extreme temperatures and increased durability. Typically, they are used for backup power systems due to their durability and resistance to recharging. They also have a high level of tightness, which makes them safer for indoor use.
When it comes to choosing between lead-acid batteries (AGM/GEL) and LiFePO4 batteries, there are several reasons why LiFePO4 may be more of an advantage.
One of the main advantages of LiFePO4 batteries is their longevity. According to the manufacturers, LiFePO4 batteries can last up to 15 years or 2000-5000 charge/discharge cycles. They can cope better with frequent charge and discharge cycles. LiFePO4 have a larger operating temperature range. However, the life of the batteries depends on the quality of production.
LiFePO4 batteries have a faster charge time compared to lead-acid batteries. This means that if the device is quickly discharged, it can be quickly charged to return to working condition. This is especially important for backup power systems, where downtime can lead to data loss or other serious consequences. They also have less tendency to self-discharge.
Lead-acid batteries (AGM/GEL) - more affordable. LiFePO4 batteries can be more expensive when purchased, in the long run they may prove to be more economical as they require less replacement and maintenance.
LiFePO4 batteries have a higher energy utilization ratio. This is especially important for solar stations, where solar energy is the main source of power.
LiFePO4 batteries have a smaller weight and size, which makes them easier to transport and install. However, as with any product, the choice between lead-acid batteries and LiFePO4 batteries depends on the specific situation, goals and requirements. It is important to carefully examine each option and make a decision based on a comparative analysis and needs assessment.
The capacity of a rechargeable battery (battery) determines the amount of energy it can store. The higher this figure, the longer the station can operate autonomously. For example, if the battery capacity of the station is 500 W/h, and the power is 600 W, then when connecting a device with a power consumption of 100 W, the station will be able to work autonomously for about 4 hours (500/100 * 0.8) - 80% of the total capacity of the battery can be used, so the coefficient 0.8 is used.
Office electrical appliances can have different capacities, depending on their functionality and type.
The main selection criterion is the power of the station, which is measured in Watts. The higher this indicator, the more devices can be connected to the station. For example, if you have a 300W charging station, you can connect to it an electrical appliance with a power consumption of up to 300W or two devices with a power consumption of up to 150W each. It is recommended to choose a charging station with a margin of at least 20% in power.
Low-power
These stations have a power of 210 to 600-700 watts and are suitable for charging phones, smartwatches, tablets and other devices. They can also be used to connect LED lamps, routers or cash registers. The number of connectors for connection can reach seven or nine, which allows you to charge several devices at the same time.
Medium power
These stations have a power of 700W to 2KW and can power office and retail equipment such as laptops, printers, servers, barcode scanners and a banknote counter. They can also ensure the operation of video surveillance systems, access points and other important devices in the office.
High power
In such stations, the power can reach 5 kW, which allows you to connect all electrical devices in a large office, bank branch or enterprise. This can include powerful servers, video surveillance systems, currency detectors, powerful switches and other equipment necessary for the smooth operation of the business.
Compared to traditional generators, portable charging stations are not only silent and clean, but also save time and resources that are usually required to maintain generators.
In light of the constant need for reliable power for workflows, portable charging stations are becoming an invaluable asset and have:
• Ability to connect multiple current consumers at the same time, allowing to power multiple devices at the same time to support smooth operation.
• Fast charging. A full charge takes only an hour and a half, and 80% of the charge can be obtained in an hour.
• Ability to charge during use. The station can be charged in the process of connecting other devices to it, which ensures continuous operation.
• Reliability and safety. Portable power supplies are characterized by a robust housing and protective systems that guarantee safety of use.
• Variety of power sources: you can charge the station not only from a 220 volt network, but also from a 12 volt igniter or solar panels, generator, which makes it an ideal solution for different conditions.
• Ecological cleanliness. The portable charging station works without exhaust and combustion products, making it an environmentally friendly solution.
When choosing a charging station for a store, office, bank branch or enterprise, several important parameters should be considered.
Battery Capacity
Capacity determines how many devices can be powered and how long they can work without recharging. Measured in watt-hours (W/h). The choice of capacity depends on the number and type of devices that require power.
Number of connectors
It is important that the charging station has enough connectors to connect all the necessary devices. Usually these can be USB Type A and C connectors, DC connectors for powering network equipment and a 220 V socket.
Charging speed
Business conditions require a quick resumption of work. The charging speed of the charging station should be high to minimize downtime. Optimal is charging from the mains, which takes about 2 hours depending on the model.
Safeguard Reliability
The charging station must have built-in overload, short circuit and overheating protection systems to ensure the safety of connected devices.
Additional functions of charging stations can significantly increase their convenience and efficiency in use in business.
Status indicators
The presence of charge and operating status indicators allows you to monitor the state of the charging station and carry out recharging in time.
Display
The information display shows the charge level, residual operating time and other important parameters.
Control from a mobile device
Some models allow you to control the charging station through a special application, which provides convenience and flexibility in use.
Portability and weight
Charging stations should be convenient to transport, especially if you plan to use them in different locations.
For corporate businesses, it is important to choose portable charging stations of well-known brands, as they provide high quality and reliability, usually versatile and easy to operate. Bluetti, EcoFlow, Jackery, 2E, Bandera Power, PowerPlant, Anker, Choetech are popular in the Ukrainian market due to fast charging and a wide range of models.
In order to extend the life of LiFePO4 batteries, it is important to follow a few rules:
1. Deep discharge of batteries to a minimum level of charge should be avoided, as this can significantly reduce their service life.
2 It is necessary to avoid overcharging the batteries, as this can also lead to a reduced service life. Usually the manufacturer indicates the limit recommendations for the charge and discharge parameters.
3. Keep batteries in a cool and dry place to avoid overheating and damage.
4. Buy goods of famous brands. Purchasing a famous brand charging station can provide you with a high-quality, safe and reliable product with a high level of support and service.
5. Do not use a cable with two plugs. This is dangerous to do, although it is possible in terms of physical capacity and functionality for many. However, this approach, if used without proper observance of safety rules, can cause serious problems. For example, overheating of the wiring may occur, cause a charging station to explode, or cause a fire in the room.
6. It is necessary to observe the temperature regime at the place of use. Do not leave the station in the cold. The required ambient temperature for such devices is about 20 C, the minimum is about -10° C. Use in the cold generates condensation, through which the station can then stop working. Even worse, leaving a fully discharged station in the cold - the battery degrades - every day it loses its capacity. It is also not entirely wise to leave the station next to the battery. Because of this, it can overheat and fail.
7. It is necessary to store the station during operation in well-ventilated areas. It is not necessary during operation to put stations in any small or poorly ventilated places such as cabinets.
8. Do not charge through the extension cord. Manufacturers do not recommend charging stations, especially powerful ones, using an extension cord. Few of us use high-quality models of extension cords, and a variety of Chinese ones can easily burn out. So it is better to turn on the device directly in the outlet.
9. Power supplies from different brands and models have different power and voltage. Therefore, if you charge the station with too powerful a charge - it can burn out, if less powerful - the power supply itself may fail or the charging process will take too long.
10. Connect devices of permissible power. The peak power of the stations is designed for short-term loads so that they can withstand jumps in the electrical network without switching off. But a constant, prolonged load that lasts a few minutes or even hours can significantly damage or even destroy charging stations.
11. It is important to make sure that your device has an uninterruptible power function, which involves constantly charging the model from the mains, and then connecting various devices to it. This mode allows the devices to continue to work even when the light is turned off. This function is usually present. If there is no such function, do not leave the station connected to the network. Otherwise, turning off the light can damage all devices that are connected to it, as well as the station itself. Therefore, it is better to avoid leaving charging stations on charging unattended, since it is impossible to anticipate all possible voltage surges in the network.
Although modern stations usually have protection against most human errors, it should be remembered that these are electronic equipment and the consequences of misuse can be serious.
In 2024, a regular customer VERNA turned to us to develop and organize a typical solution for the uninterrupted operation of the store network during a possible power outage.
A chain of 45 stores, each outlet of which consists of one store and one warehouse.
